Precious

“Precious,” the harrowing story of a 350-pound illiterate teenage girl who is pregnant for the second time by her father and horribly abused by her mother, is shot in an almost-documentary style interspersed with fantasy sequences. (It opens Nov. 6.) Like most independent films, it is character-driven, and at its heart is a spirit of understanding. When Precious’s plight lands her in a special school, she blossoms: the audience’s initial rejection of Precious, even repulsion at the sight of her, slowly gives way to a kind of identification.

At Cannes, the film received a 15-minute standing ovation. “They wouldn’t stop clapping,” Daniels told me as he gulped a vodka. “I’m a director — after six minutes, I’m saying, please sit down. But I’m also a producer, so I’m thinking, what’s the record? Can we break the record for the longest standing ovation at the festival?”

Desert Flower

Trailer for the movie Desert Flower based off the life and book by Waris Dirie. Waris Drie fled Somalia when she was 13 - to avoid an arranged marriage with a man old enough to be her grandfather. At the age of 18, she was discovered in London and became one of the worlds first Supermodels. She later gave a testimony of her own experience with female genital mutilation (that occurred at age 5) the story which ran in Marie Claire magazine sparked worldwide outrage. Dirie then began her crusade to stop female genital mutilation - with international pressure and work through her organization they’ve managed to outlaw the practice in 14 African countries. Not only is Dirie’s story of “nomad to model” inspirational for all of us but as a spokesperson for female genital mutilation she gives the over 150 million women effected, a voice.

Stephen Wiltshire

“British artist Stephen Wiltshire is currently attempting to draw the Manhattan skyline from memory. since Monday October 26th. Wiltshire began filling in an 18 foot canvas at the Pratt institute, Brooklyn. The drawing is expected to be complete by Friday. You can follow his progress through the live webcam here.

Wiltshire diagnosed with autism at the age of three displays an unusually powerful
photographic memory that he has applied to rendering city scapes. He can look at the subject of his drawing once and reproduce it accurately with photographic detail, down to the exact number of columns or windows on a building. He memorizes their shapes, locations and the architecture.”

Scorpio Weekly Horoscope

Learning to trust in another can be a challenging feat for the Scorpio born. Learning to trust in the unseen can take an even greater faith and ability to let go and give in. What you are giving in to is another universe, an entirely different dimension infused within and beyond our puny reality. Remember this truth this week when you find yourself fixated on a personal suffering. Perhaps this is Gods’ way of saying, “Hey look buddy, over here? Remember me? I do have the power to change it all in a blink. Trust this is so and I will prove it to you.” Ahh magic words for a Scorpio “Prove it to me”. May the Gods be good to you now. Just get their attention. They are standing by to deliver.

This is the day for communication

Tuesday: Pace This is the day for communication. Reach out to people you’ve been wanting to contact. Brainstorm the future with kindred spirits. Watch for information and messages about situations taking off or expanding, particularly if they started around the spring equinox and stalled. Breakthroughs and lucky breaks are possible and probable. In any important conversation, reconsider the topic with this question: How could this be bigger and better? Go for broke. Spirits are high, so tricky conversations will go better (and longer) than you might have expected.

Chinese Zodiac - Rooster

(I was born in the year of the rooster!)
Roosters are the most eccentric of the Chinese zodiac. They are full of dreams and romantic ideas. They are colorful and attractive, radiant and dashing, and they are quite proud of themselves. Roosters are organized, precise, and their sharp eyes seek out fine details in everything. They are perfectionists and leave no room for human error. To Roosters, a difficult task is a challenge. They dearly love starting controversies. Roosters express themselves very well both in writing and speech. They are knowledgeable in most subjects you wish to discuss. When you challenge them you must be prepared for a long fight. Their stamina is amazing and they win their point at all costs. Even when they are wrong, they will still be right in one way or another!

Roosters can be blunt and brutal. Their direct approach to life makes them poor diplomats. They speak their minds with little regard for the feelings of others. Why should others be upset? Roosters are right, aren't they?

Roosters are good at handling money and their self-control with keeping budgets is phenomenal. They are not miserly, and in fact, they can be extremely generous and giving. They simply want their finances in complete accord, and yours, too. If you have trouble, Roosters quickly straighten you out whether you want them to or not. Don't be ungrateful either, you should be glad they condescended to help you at all. Roosters are careful with their time and you only deserve so much, so plan things well. Roosters are sincere in their desire to help and no one can carry out important tasks like them. Just be certain your orders are explicit and don't expect them to improvise for you on their own time.

I CHOOSE YOU

Our animus and anima

everything we experience with other people is being updated, which translates for many of us into new friends and partners as well. The new people who come in will have a very different dynamic; the people who leave will clearly belong to the past. Yes, leaving is still ongoing, and in many instances we’re the ones stepping out the door. We don’t have to continue in relationships that are built on conflict, or domination, or control, or demeaning, or any version of our self that is less than who we are. If we feel we “have” to stay in the relationship, say for job or family reasons, we don’t have to continue in the old dynamics. We can choose to opt out of them. True, there may be repercussions, but consider the alternative.

Anglerfish

The Prickly Deep Sea Anglerfish males becoming one with their female (Image Credit: David Paul/Mark Norman, Australian Conservation Foundation)

Anglerfish, a deep sea fish named for the spiny appendage on its head that it uses as bait to “fish” its prey, has an unusual mating habit. As it spends its time in the bottom of the ocean, finding a mate is a problem – but the species solved this evolutionary challenge beautifully.

At first, scientists were perplexed because they’ve never caught a male anglerfish. Also, all female anglerfish have a lump on their body that looks like a parasite. Only later did scientists discover that the lump is the remain of the male fish.

The tiny male anglerfish are born without any digestive system, so once they hatch, they have to find a female quickly. When a male finds a female, he quickly bites her body and releases an enzyme that digests his skin and her body to fuse the two in an eternal embrace. The male then wastes away, becoming nothing but a lump on the female anglerfish’s body!

When the female is ready to spawn, her “male appendage” is there, ready to release sperms to fertilize her egg. (via neatorama)

It is obvious that we are inter-are.

You Are Me You are me and I am you.

It is obvious that we are inter-are.

You cultivate the flower in yourself so that I will be beautiful.

I transform the garbage in myself so that you do not have to suffer.

I support you you support me.

I am here to bring you peace you are here to bring me joy.

Thich Naht Hahn

I swim in the sky; I float

“Oh, God, I know no joy as great as a moment of rushing into a new love, no ecstasy like that of a new love. I swim in the sky; I float; my body is full of flowers, flowers with fingers giving me acute, acute caresses, sparks, jewels, quivers of joy, dizziness, such dizziness. Music inside of one, drunkenness. Only closing the eyes and remembering, and the hunger, the hunger for more, more, the great hunger, the voracious hunger, and thirst.”

new planets

WASHINGTON – European astronomers have found 32 new planets outside our solar system, adding evidence to the theory that the universe has many places where life could develop.

Scientists using the European Southern Observatory telescope didn't find any planets quite the size of Earth or any that seemed habitable or even unusual. But their announcement increased the number of planets discovered outside the solar system to more than 400.

Six of the newly found planets are several times bigger than Earth, increasing the population of so-called super-Earths by more than 30 percent. Most planets discovered so far are far bigger, Jupiter-sized or even larger.

Two of the newly discovered planets were as small as five times the size of Earth and one was up to five times larger than Jupiter.

Astronomer Stephane Udry of the University of Geneva said the results support the theory that planet formation is common, especially around the most common types of stars.

"I'm pretty confident that there are Earth-like planets everywhere," Udry said in a Web-based news briefing from a conference in Portugal. "Nature doesn't like a vacuum. If there is space to put a planet there, there will be a planet there."

What astronomers said is especially exciting is that about 40 percent of sun-like stars have planets that are closer to being Earth-sized than the size of Jupiter. Jupiter's mass is more than 300 times that of Earth's.

Depending on definitions of the size of super-Earths, the discovery suggests that planets that have a mass similar to Earth's are "extraordinarily commonplace," said Alan Boss, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He was not part of the European team. "The universe must indeed be crowded with habitable worlds."

Boss said finding 32 planets at once is a record "and it really shows that the Europeans have taken the lead" in finding planets outside the solar system.

The discoveries were made by the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, which is an attachment to the European observatory telescope in Chile that looks for slight wobbles in a star's movements. Those changes would be made by the tug of a planet's gravity on the star. There are no photos of these planets

Thursday

A beautiful partial solar eclipse in Manilla, Philippines on January 26, 2009. Photo by Alberto Lao.
Thursday: Our subconscious sends more messages via dreams. This time they provide perspective on relationships and emotional needs. Potentially difficult but necessary conversations take place in the dream world, which also previews jolts that are coming or needed, in situations or the way we view them. It’s all psychological prep for the Venus/Pluto square that dominates the day. In this potent mix, desires escalate into compulsions, attractions into temptations with a magnetism that defies resistance. Pluto is demanding that we experience the force of our desires and bring them to consciousness. Power struggles are probable, between individuals as well as between earthbound and higher will. Watch for triangulations; Venus/Pluto contacts have a way of stirring them up. Pluto says you can’t have everything and demands a clearing of space. Some of what goes out the door could involve fantasy and illusion.

Peruvian grasshopper

Peruvian grasshopper

Acrid chemicals in the body of this Peruvian grasshopper (Aplatacris colorata) act as a defence against insect-eating predators. The grasshopper’s vivid pattern of warning colours advertises the fact that it has a noxious taste and, since most of its enemies are birds that hunt by sight, the warning is very effective. Any bird that tries to eat one of these grasshoppers is unlikely to make the same mistake twice. The concentrated toxins in the insect’s body are made from chemicals in its food plants.
