Putting the very small on the big stage, the 35th annual Nikon Small World Competition awards top images
A favorite flower in the southern U.S., the black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata), went under confocal fluorescence and radiation imaging to reveal its hairlike trichomes. This image, magnified at 450x, was plucked by Shirley Owens of Michigan State University in East Lansing.
