(CNN) -- A fast-moving cholera outbreak in Haiti has claimed at least 194 lives, according to a U.N. spokeswoman.
The country's health ministry is reporting another 2,364 cases from the recent outbreak, said Imogen Wall, spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
This comes after recent heavy rains caused the banks of the Artibonite River to overflow and flood the area. Dammed in 1956 to create Lac de Peligre, the Artibonite River is Haiti's dominant drainage system.
On Friday, officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Agency for International Development discussed the outbreak and efforts to work out a containment strategy.
The CDC will send an 11-member team to Haiti over the next few days to find out which antibiotics will be most effective in treating the cholera outbreak. US AID will provide supplies needed to set up treatment centers. The group has already prepositioned 300,000 oral re-hydration kits and are distributing water purification kits in affected areas.
Officials also confirmed that all the reported cases are in the Artibonite and Central Plateau regions, north of Port-au-Prince. They said they're working to contain the outbreak there and prevent its spread to the densely populated capital

A cafe in Portland, Oregon, made a little history yesterday when it became the first in the nation to legally open its doors to pot smokers. The Cannabis Cafe welcomes those who are licensed by the state to smoke marijuana for medical reasons. It doesn’t sell pot to members—that’s still a no-no—but patrons can bring their own or share with friends, reports the Oregonian.
“Welcome to a place of our own,” said a leader of the state chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. “Welcome to freedom.”

US President Barack Obama has vowed not to forget American Indian tribes, as representatives gathered for a White House conference on native issues.
The first annual White House Tribal Nations Conference brings together one delegate from each of the 564 federally recognised American Indian tribes. It is the first time in US history that they will all meet a sitting president. Mr Obama said: “You will not be forgotten as long as I’m in this White House.”
The event’s agenda covers a variety of issues, from centuries old broken treaty promises to more modern issues such as healthcare, crime and poverty. ”We’re not going to go through the motions and pay tribute to each other, then furl up the flags and go our separate ways,” he [Obama] was quoted as saying by Associated Press.
The president acknowledged the US federal government’s history of ignoring the needs and rights of American Indians and Alaska Natives

On Tuesday, September 1, I spoke to more than 2000 incoming freshman students at Montclair State University in New Jersey. The Department of Student Development and Campus Life invited me to campus to show clips from my documentary film, Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, and address the issue of men's physical and sexual violence against women as part of their New Student orientation. In my speech, I spoke about the urgent need for men to act as proactive bystanders in the face of such violence.
As I spoke to the students about gender-based violence in north Jersey, in Brooklyn, NY, Lenox Ramsey, 25, taunted, chased, and then finally shot his wife, Kaidan Ramsey, 22, in broad daylight near Brooklyn's Medgar Evers College. Surveillance tapes show a terrified Kaidan running for her life as people on the street watched, doing nothing.
Our communities cannot remain silent and tolerate this kind of violence. We must speak up loudly and boldly when men physically or sexually assault women. We also need to ramp up efforts to educate boys and men about patriarchy, sexism, male privilege, and how men's violence against women is ultimately about men maintaining power and control over female bodies.
This has to stop. Men's violence against women is pervasive worldwide, and we can no longer deflect this issue onto women as if they are the cause of the problem and should fix it by themselves. Each day, new stories emerge about men who abduct, rape, beat, harass, and kill women. We do not need any more statistics or empirical data to prove or legitimize that men's violence against women is a real problem. It is real, and it happens each and every day, all over the world.
Men, we cannot be silent anymore. Non-abusive men who respect women and who disrespect men that abuse women have to speak up when incidents like this occur. You do not have to be an expert or know the latest statistics. All you have to do is care, have courage, be a leader, and speak up in defense of the women you love. CIA prisons
MIAMI (Reuters) - Health workers violated medical ethics when they helped interrogate terrorism suspects who were tortured at secret CIA prisons overseas, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.
The medical workers, thought to be doctors and psychologists, monitored prisoners while they were mistreated at CIA prisons and advised interrogators whether to continue, adjust or halt the abuse, the ICRC said in a report based on interviews with 14 prisoners in 2007.
One prisoner alleged that medical personnel monitored his blood oxygen levels while he was subjected to waterboarding, a simulated drowning designed to induce panic and widely considered to be torture, the ICRC said.
Other prisoners said that as they stood shackled with their arms chained above their heads, a doctor regularly measured the swelling in their legs and signaled when they should be allowed to sit down.
The ICRC interviewed 14 men who had been held in secret CIA prisons overseas before being sent to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2006.
The 14 are considered by the United States to be "high-value" al Qaeda suspects who plotted or carried out mass murders, including the Sept. 11 attacks and the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings. They had been held by the CIA, most for more than three years, in extreme isolation and had not been allowed contact with each other when the ICRC interviewed them at Guantanamo in November 2007.

Digable Planets tour cancelled
In a bit of shuffling, Digable Planets have cancelled their tour with Common Market and Dujeous. According to a post at Hyena Records, "there were 'irreconcilable differences' in Digable Planet's camp, so they've pulled the plug on the entire tour." That includes the show that was supposed to happen at Highline Ballroom in NYC tonight, April 1st (no foolin).

Erykah Badu
Singer Erykah Badu made it out for her performance at the SXSW performance on Saturday (March 21) in Austin, Texas - but not before being delayed by an unusual stalker.
According to TMZ.com, Badu used Twitter to update fans that "Police just apprehended a stalker in front of my house. Stay tuned to details."
The singer said that the stalker, a woman, had been outside of her house numerous times, and that she had "several misc. items spread out in the grass. Blue shutters, a rabbit, a tucan and a sketch book."
The stalker was "pepper sprayed and cuffed" by officers, and the ensuing police report that Badu filled out apparently made the singer late for her performance.

Micheal Jackson Sold Out
Tickets for Michael Jackson's run of 50 O2 Arena shows in London sold out in hours today (March 13) after the general sale opened to the public.
Promoters AEG Live and Ticketmaster said in a statement that a total of 750,000 tickets have now been sold, following the pre-sale to registered fans on March 11.
Tickets were selling at an average rate of 40,000 an hour when they became available to the general public at 7am GMT today. There were also queues of fans from around the world buying tickets in person at the venue.

Roots Picnic 2009
TV On The Radio, Public Enemy, the Black Keys and Santigold are among the acts handpicked by The Roots to play the band's second annual hometown "Roots Picnic" on June 6 at Festival Pier in Philadelphia. Public Enemy will perform the classic album "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" in its entirety backed by The Roots and Brooklyn-based Afrobeat band Antibalas. The Roots will also play two sets, opening and closing the festivities. The "Roots Picnic" runs from 2:00 pm - 11:00 pm.
The Pipes featuring Zoe Kravitz and Busdriver are also set to play on the main stage, with DJs Cash Money and Jazzy Jeff spinning sets in between the bands. Writtenhouse, Back to Basics, Making Time, Busdriver, Kid Cudi and Asher Roth will all play on a second stage.
