The Spanish Republican government commissioned Pablo Picasso to create a large mural for the Spanish display at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (1937) Paris International Exposition in the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris.

Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace. Beneath the icy waters of Antarctica, in a place that seems so inhospitable, live amongst the rarest and most beautiful creatures on earth. Recently, a team of international researchers traveled to study marine life there, where ocean temperatures are rising more rapidly than anywhere else in the world. What they brought back are some of the most fascinating photographs of Antarctic sea life ever seen--portraits of organisms on the front-line of global climate change.

The photographs, released by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), reveal a wide variety of rare marine life--from fish and octopus to giant sea-spiders and starfish, all specially adapted for their unique ecosystem. As ocean temperatures rise, the researchers warn, the fate of these spectacular organisms is increasingly uncertain

World renowned Indian sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik is already well known for his work with Santa Claus--last year, he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the largest ever 'sand Santa'. This year, he's using his talent and bolstered profile to highlight the growing challenges climate change is bringing to India--and to do so, he built over 100 Santas out of 1,000 tons of sand in the tourist town of Puri. And he broke another world record in the process: most Santas made of sand on a single beach ever. Photos after the jump.

The exhibition, which was opened by two foreign tourists last week, seeks to spread awareness about global warming. Mr Patnaik has also sculpted Christmas trees with the message "Save the Earth from Global Warming", to encourage people to give trees as gifts. Hundreds of tourists and locals have been visiting the beach to see the unique display.

Eagle Nebula

Eagle Nebula: A star-making region famous for its space pillars appears in this infrared view from Spitzer. Green denotes cooler dust, including the pillars seen in the center. Red represents hotter dust thought to have been warmed by the explosion of a massive star about 8,000 to 9,000 years ago.

Astronomers estimate that the explosion’s blast wave would have spread outward and toppled the three pillars about 6,000 years ago. Since light from the Eagle nebula takes 7,000 years to reach us, this means we wouldn’t witness the destruction for about 1,000 years.

What resemble dainty butterfly wings are actually roiling cauldrons of gas heated to more than 36,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The gas is tearing across space at more than 600,000 miles an hour - fast enough to travel from Earth to the Moon in 24 minutes! A dying star that was once about five times the mass of the Sun is at the center of this fury. It has ejected its envelope of gases and is now unleashing a stream of ultraviolet radiation that is making the cast-off material glow. The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), installed by NASA astronauts in May 2009, snapped this image of the planetary nebula, catalogued as NGC 6302, which lies within our Milky Way galaxy, roughly 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The glowing gas is the star’s outer layers, expelled over about 2,200 years. NGC 6302 was imaged on July 27, 2009, with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 in ultraviolet and visible light. Jellyfish Found in Arctic Deep

This red-and-purple Crossota millsae, collected deep in the Arctic Ocean in 2005, is also found off of California and Hawaii, a scientist said in December 2009. Biologists are realizing that jellyfish are more common predators in the oceans than thought, Monterey Peninsula College’s Raskoff said by email. “They are a very underappreciated and understudied group that have big roles to play in the food webs of the deep sea.”

Kowalski has spent the last several years compiling a collection of aerial photographs taken while paragliding over Poland during the winter.

In regards to why he chose paragliding as his means to capture the images instead of an aeroplane, Kowalski says

“The paragliding pilot is in absolute control over the speed, and the precise angle of the shot. You can also get a lot closer to the ground so the quality of the pictures, and the framing, is often better than if you are relying on an aeroplane pilot to manoeuvre you.”
